Many people have always labeled Big Star as one of the pinnacle power pop acts, and so it’s only obvious that their influence shows in many other great groups I enjoy.. especially Cheap Trick, who ended up covering the Big Star classic “In the Street” for the That 70’s Show theme. Since That’s 70’s Show was always a favorite of mine, I couldn’t help but having that killer “In the Street” guitar riff stuck in my head.. and that riff was a big part of this song. My tribute to the forefathers of bad ass pop, I would say. I wrote this song in my garage during the fall of 2010. I have this rather large garage, and before it got to cold I would spend most of my evenings playing acoustic guitar and writing songs...Often I would always ride my bike over to the gas station to pick up some cold beers, and on my way back to the garage with an ice cold six pack of Budweisers, suddenly out of nowhere the chorus of “Why You Gotta Lie” came into my head. Minutes later the song was written! The best songs are written in under 10 minutes as far as i’m concerned. This song also features some great dueling guitar action from Josh Malia and Geoff Useless, and a rippin’ Farfisa solo in the vein of a Del Shannon or Tommy James and the Shondells that was played by Kris “Fingers” Rodgers. - Kurt Baker, Portland, ME.
lyrics
Why You Gotta Lie
Girl I gotta know right now
Cause the stories don’t add up somehow
Ya I’ve heard you’ve been seen with him
There’s no way that you can win now
It’s the best thing that I can do
To try and make you tell the truth
Cause there’s no use in keeping up
Our love if it’s breaking up now
It’s not what you say or what you do
That makes me feel so unamused
Girl I don’t know why, why you gotta lie?
There’s no reply, your seen with other guys
It’s no surprise, so why you gotta lie?
The news is all over town (Ya she’s a cheater!)
And if the truth it’s pulling me down (She’s gonna leave ya!)
So there’s no use in keeping up
Our Love if it’s breaking up now
It’s not what you say or what you do
That makes me feel so unamused
Girl I don’t know why, why you gotta lie?
There’s no reply, your seen with other guys
It’s no surprise, so why you gotta lie?

Nick Piunti's third album confirms the idiosyncratic talent of this musician who keeps churning out fantastic power-pop tunes that would rejoice even the most jaded pop-rock fan, whether young or old, if they knew about the existence of 'Beyond the Static'. POPPHIL
Great, thrashing, melodic indie rock from this Illinois group that juxtaposes sugary vocal hooks with barbed guitars. Bandcamp New & Notable May 28, 2022
